Samsung Semiconductor, major adjustments
Samsung Electronics has decided to suspend the development of automotive semiconductors. The move comes in line with the business strategy of reintegrating artificial intelligence (AI) chips. The semiconductor industry predicts that Samsung Electronics will soon come up with a plan to restructure its device solutions (DS) division, which will focus on selection and concentration. According to the semiconductor industry on Wednesday, Samsung Electronics' system LSI division, which is responsible for the chip design business, recently carried out a business and organizational reorganization related to the development of AI chips.
As a result, the development of the next-generation Exynos Auto processor (codenamed KITT3) has been temporarily suspended. The people who developed this chip have been deployed to the AI system-on-chip (SoC) team in charge of AI chip development within the department. At present, the department has assembled 100 to 150 professional designers to design AI chips.
In 2018, Samsung Electronics announced the Exynos Auto brand to actively enter the high-performance automotive semiconductor market. Last year, Samsung unveiled the Exynos Auto V920, which uses a 5-nanometer (nm) process, and announced a partnership with Hyundai Motor in the semiconductor field to proactively prepare for the advent of autonomous driving and electric vehicles.
However, since AI such as ChatGPT became a hot topic at the end of 2022, Samsung's chip design strategy has also been adjusted. Samsung's chip development strategy has also been affected by the fact that global automakers such as Hyundai Motor and Tesla have begun to develop their own chips amid the "gap" (a temporary slowdown in demand for electric vehicles before market penetration).
"The content of the reorganization has not yet been decided," said a Samsung Electronics official.

Samsung launches Exynos Auto cabin chip
In June last year, Samsung announced the Exynos Auto V920 to replace the Exynos Auto V9 chip, which offers upgraded specifications including a new AMD RDNA 2 GPU architecture. Although the chip was announced earlier this month, the company has shared its specifications, revealing what we've learned. Starting with the details, the Samsung Exynos Auto V920 comes with a total of 10 Arm Cortex-A78AE cores, including two quad-core and one dual-core cluster, providing a 70% boost in CPU performance alone, and is manufactured using Samsung's 5nm process nodes. But the second major part of the chip itself is the GPU, which is made from the Xclipse design. The chip also features a dual-core NPU for AI capabilities that delivers performance up to 23.1 TOPS, 2.7 times faster than its predecessor. According to Samsung, intelligent driving starts with powerful computing power. The Exynos Auto V920 is equipped with 10 Arm Cortex-A78AE core cpus and consists of two quad-core clusters and one dual-core cluster for maximum efficiency. CPU performance increases by up to 1.7x for a smoother, immersive infotainment experience for your next generation of mobile vehicles. Cars now offer a full range of entertainment experiences with rich graphics capabilities. The Exynos Auto V920 is equipped with an Xclipse GPU built on AMD's RDNA 2 architecture to deliver an immersive graphics experience on multiple (up to six) high-resolution displays. Enjoy a highly interactive graphical user interface and smooth gaming experience in your vehicle. The Samsung Xclipse GPU, designed with AMD's RDNA 2 graphics architecture, is capable of running up to six high-resolution displays simultaneously at 3x 5K (8K*2K) or 3x DFHD (3840*1440) resolution, while providing users with an outstanding experience. Infotainment systems and GUIs are scattered throughout the car. The Exynos Auto V920 is equipped with LPDDR5 memory with bandwidth up to 102 GB/s, UFS 3.1 storage system, 2 USXGMII 10 Gbps Ethernet ports, full 4K 240FPS video decoding and 4K 120FPS Video coding function. The Samsung Exynos V920 supports up to 12 cameras, the new 144dB HDR and 4-on-chip exposure merges, the latest HiFi 5 audio processing core, and an updated security system to defend against attacks. As Samsung has previously said, its latest automotive processor, the Exynos Auto V920, has been selected to power Hyundai Motor Co. 's next-generation in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system, which is expected to be available by 2025. This marks the first collaboration between Samsung and global mobility leader Hyundai Motor in automotive semiconductors. Jae Geol Pyee, executive vice president of Sales and Marketing for System LSI, Samsung Electronics' sub-business, said: "We are excited to partner with Hyundai Motor, a world-renowned mobile manufacturer, and we expect this partnership to further strengthen our position in the automotive infotainment space." . "Working closely with our customers and ecosystem partners around the world, we will continue to build the most advanced automotive chip solutions that deliver safe and enjoyable mobility experiences." The Exynos Auto V920 is Samsung's third-generation automotive processor for advanced IVI systems. With significant upgrades in CPU, graphics and neural processing performance, the V920 will deliver the best in-car experience by displaying critical driving information in real time and seamlessly playing graphically rich video content and games on multiple displays. To further ensure driver safety, the V920's embedded safety island meets Automotive Safety Integrity Level B (ASIL-B) requirements to detect and manage faults in real time, ensuring the safety of the IVI system.
