A new breakthrough in semiconductor materials - graphene

2024-05-07

Scientists are developing an atom-thick carbon material that could help the U.S. military develop more accurate radars and computers that operate close to the speed of light. Currently, IBM, along with Samsung and the U.S. Air Force and Navy, is funding the research, which is considering the use of graphene in semiconductors and computers.

Discovered in 2004 by researchers at the University of Manchester, graphene is a two-dimensional crystal made of carbon atoms that has unusual properties such as conductivity and is considered the silicon of the future. The discovery was awarded a Nobel Prize last year. Graphene conducts electricity 30 times faster than silicon and is close to the speed of light, and companies like IBM could speed up PCS once they find a way. Until recently, graphene was limited to the development of more efficient batteries and foldable touch screens, where scientists did not have to control the stopping and starting of electrons in the material. Konstantin Novoselov and Andrei Geim can now suspend two layers of graphene in a vacuum, reassembling the electronic architecture.

In addition, Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, is also involved in it because it wants to use it in mobile phones, touch screens, printing electronic devices. Nokia's head of research, Jenny Coviroga, said research into graphene as an alternative to existing touchscreen technology is at a turning point. Coviroga's team focuses on the electron sensitivity of graphene. Graphene has excellent elasticity and toughness, and is 300 times harder than iron. In June, Nokia said graphene could be introduced into its foldable phone, the Morph. Finally, Coviroga added: "In the long term, it is possible to replace silicon with graphene."

FOUNTYL TECHNOLOGIES PTE. LTD. was located in Singapore, we are focus on the research and development, manufacturing and technical services of precision ceramic parts in the semiconductor field for more than 10 years. our main product are ceramic chuck, ceramic end effector, ceramic plunger and ceramic square beam, and produces various of ceramics (porous ceramics, alumina, zirconia, silicon nitride, silicon carbide, aluminum nitride and microwave dielectric ceramics and other advanced ceramic) parts.
